To dote on something means to give it lots of love and attention, and we can see that care and love in our latest Partner Spotlight interview with DOTEON in Seoul, Korea. Located in a modern building with large windows that look out onto a beautifully landscaped courtyard, nature feels as though it is making its way inside. But the serene location is not the only thing that makes DOTEON unique. Their store combines ceramic arts, painting, and audio components in a single retail space. Along with the beautiful art for sale, there is also a ceramic studio that provides regular classes and lessons for those interested in learning the art form. We had the opportunity to chat with the President of DOTEON, Park Hyemin, to learn more.
무언가를 사랑한다는 것은 그것에 많은 사랑과 관심을 주는 것을 의미하며 우리는 한국의 서울에 있는 딜러 도트온과의 최근 파트너 스포트라이트 인터뷰에서 그 관심과 사랑을 볼 수 있다. 도트온은 아름다운 경관을 자랑하는 안뜰을 내다볼 수 있는 커다란 창문이 있는 현대식 건물에 위치하고 있습니다. 우리가 일반적으로 보아오던 묘하게 딱딱한 오디오숍들과는 완전히 다른 모습인데, 새로운 시선과 젊은 감각으로 정말 제대로 공들여 만들어낸 공간이다. 특히 오디오 컴포넌트 뿐만 아니라 각종 공예품 및 페인팅 제품들도 함께 접할 수 있다는 것은 이곳만의 아이덴티티. 일반적인 오디오 매장이 아닌 일종의 복합 문화 공간으로서, 머무는 것자체가 즐거운 곳, 바로 도트온에 대한 이야기이다. 또한 이곳에서는 세라믹 클래스도 진행하고 있는데, 창작의 즐거움을 누릴 수 있는 멋진 경험들이 준비되어 있다. 박혜민 도트온 대표와 함께 이 파트너에 대해 자세히 알아보는 시간을 가져보겠습니다.
Combining art exhibition and sales, audio equipment sales, and a ceramic studio with classes is unique. Where did the concept for this combination come from?
I studied ceramic crafts in college, and my father was in the speaker business for a long time.
After graduating from college, I ran a small ceramic studio for personal work, and I always worked with music on. I usually worked with jazz on, but I came to think that music warms up ceramic studios that can look cold. So, I started a collaboration between my father's audio business and ceramic studio, and I am happy that it is a more complete space than I expected. Many people like our space.
미술 전시와 판매, 오디오 장비 판매, 세라믹 스튜디오와 클래스 등을 결합하는 것이 독특합니다. 이 조합의 개념은 어디에서 유래되었습니까?
저는 대학에서 도자공예를 공부했고, 아버지는 스피커 사업을 오래하셨습니다.
대학 졸업 후 개인 작업을 위한 작은 공방을 운영했는데 항상 음악을 틀어두고 작업을 했습니다. 주로 재즈를 틀어놓고 작업을 했는데, 자칫 차가워 보일 수 있는 세라믹 스튜디오를 음악이 따스하게 만들어준다는 생각을 하게 됐습니다. 그래서 아버지의 오디오 사업과 공방의 콜라보레이션을 시작하게 되었고 기대보다 완성도 높은 공간이 되어 기쁩니다.많은 사람들이 우리의 공간을 좋아하고 있습니다.
Dote on is such an endearing term. What made you choose this name for your gallery, studio, and store?
I thought about it with my husband. My husband recommended that it matches my image well because of its soft tone and lovely meaning.
Doteon 은 정말 사랑스런 용어입니다. 갤러리, 스튜디오, 그리고 매장에 이 이름을 선택하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?
제 남편과 함께 생각해냈습니다. 어감이 부드럽고 의미가 사랑스러워서 남편이 저의 이미지와 잘 어울린다고 추천해줬습니다.
How important was it for you to combine the sense of sight and sound in this space and how do you feel they are connected?
This is my hometown and I think it is the most nature-friendly neighborhood in Seoul. Maybe that's why I personally love grass and trees. I wanted to have music, art, and nature that I love in my space, so I planned this space now. And thanks to this space, my family bonds are deepened.
이 공간에서 시각과 소리를 결합하는 것이 얼마나 중요하게 생각했으며, 그것들이 어떻게 연결되어 있다고 생각하십니까?
이 동네는 나의 고향인데 서울에서 가장 자연친화적인 동네라고 생각한다. 그래서인지 개인적으로 풀과 나무를 사랑한다. 나의 공간에는 내가 사랑하는 음악, 예술과 자연이 함께 있었으면 해서 지금 이 공간을 기획하게 되었다. 그리고 이 도트온이라는 공간 덕에 가족간의 유대감도 깊어진다.
We often see images of the pottery wheel and audio equipment in the courtyard. What is your favorite music to listen to or play for others while working in the ceramic studio or throwing pots on the wheel?
By far, I love jazz the most. I usually use a technique of using various colors of clay together, and I think the colorful and harmonious tone of jazz is similar.
우리는 종종 안뜰에서 도자기 물레와 오디오 장비의 이미지를 볼 수 있는데, 세라믹 스튜디오에서 작업 하거나 도자기를 빚을 동안 다른 사람들한테 들려주거나 할 때 가장 좋아하는 음악은 무엇입니까?
단연 나는 재즈를 가장 사랑한다. 나는 여러 가지 색의 흙을 함께 사용하는 기법을 주로 사용하는데, 재즈의 다채롭고 조화로운 음색이 이와 비슷하다고 생각한다.
We see that you have some friends show up in the courtyard from time to time. Have you named any of the kittens that have made special appearances on your Instagram account?
At first, I named the cat that visited often Donnie. Donnie doesn't come anymore, but new cats sometimes visit DOTEON. I'm glad the cats come, even if they don't have names.
가끔 안뜰에 몇몇 친구들이 보이는데, 인스타그램에 특별출연 된 아기 고양이들의 이름을 지어줬나요?
초반에 자주 오던 고양이를 도니라고 이름 지어주었다. 그런데 더 이상 도니는 찾아오지 않고 새로운 고양이들이 때때로 도트온을 방문한다. 이름은 없어도 고양이들이 오는게 반갑다.
